THE LABIRYNTHS OF ANIMATED REVOLUTION

The 2018 edition of the International Animated Film Festival Animator celebrates the legacy of Jan Lenica, who, together with Walerian Borowczyk, revolutionized the world of animated film and elevated its status to a form of fine art. The author famous for The Labyrinth is one of the most intriguing figures in 20th century Polish art. In addition to being an animator, he was an outstanding illustrator, cartoonist and poster artist. A co-founder of the Polish School of Posters, Lenica is also regarded as the founding father of the Polish school of animation. His work helped to put an end to the perception of animation as a slightly naïve and unambitious art form intended mostly for children. By introducing elements mastered in their poster work, such as graphic brevity and the use of simple signs, Lenica and Borowczyk transformed the world of animation. Thanks to his groundbreaking approach, Lenica has become an internationally recognized artist. Because of all this, it is important that we examine his legacy and take a closer look at the contribution he has made to the evolution of animation through time. To mark the 90th anniversary of the artist’s birth and the 60th anniversary of the premiere of his film House, we invite you to take part in Animator’s Brainstorm Sessions, as well as in the accompanying screenings, dedicated to Lenica, his legacy and the question of creative freedom and originality in animation.
