The 2nd International Animated Film Festival
ANIMATOR - POZNAŃ
July 6-11, 2009
The art of animation is not a hundred, but several hundred years old. Giovanni Batista della Porta described projections with a magic lantern in his work, Magiae naturalis, published in Naples as early as in 1558. With time, the laterna magica transformed into a sophisticated device which could not only show a series of static slides, but also move their elements with levers and cranks. Other devices for creating the illusion of motion followed: phenakistiscopes, praxinoscopes, zoetropes, etc. Three years before the first screening of the cinematograph of the Lumière brothers, Charles-Émile Reynaud painted his films on paper strips and showed them in his Théâtre Optique in the vaults of the Musée Grévin in Paris.
The second edition of ANIMATOR pays homage to the outstanding, often anonymous inventors and pioneers who have contributed to the emergence of animated films. Among other special attractions, the festival features the American Magic Lantern Theatre thanks to which we can see with our own eyes that animated film preceded film. We are also to honour artists who, like Jan Švankmajer, continue the work of great ancient alchemists and wizards.
Animator 2009 presents a wide range of creative attitudes and inspirations. From Alexandre Alexeieff, who invented the pinscreen in the 1930s, to contemporary computer animations. From drawn on film movies, which one of the most devoted promoters is Kazimierz Urbański who is celebrating his eightieth birthday, to the crazy cartoons by Bill Plympton. From the completely inimitable Patrick Bokanowski, the great poet of cinema, to children films by Leszek Gałysz. Our special guests include outstanding artists from three continents: America, Europe and Australia. It is with great joy that we welcome Krakow-born Yoram Gross, the father of Israeli and Australian animated films.
This year, we are also going beyond a strict definition of animated film to enter the bordering territory of the puppet theatre (Companie Miettes de Spectacles), performance (Mariola Brillowska), and music spectacle (Pere Ubu). We will have a chance to taste a bite of Pataphisic and black humour of the Panic Group. We will listen to the panicky laughter of Roland Topor. Neither did we forget about live screenings with live musical accompaniment.
