QUAY BROTHERS – presentation of the film: Institute Benjamenta, or The Dream People Call Human Life, dir. Stephen and Timothy Quay, 1995 /Japan/Germany/Great Britain/. 104 min

Jakob von Gunten arrives at the Institute Benjamenta run by a brother and his sister Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta to acquire the skills of a servant. To study there it means to obey strange and strict rules and an unorthodox rituals. Jakob has to face the expectations of a beauteous Lisa and her imperious brother. The fascinations which evolve among three of them destroy the order established at the Institute.
It is an oneric, poetic film, which is drawing us into the labyrinth of metatphors and understatements. The screenplay is an adaptation of the novel “Jakob von Gunten” by Swiss writer Robert Walser.
